♦   01/02/2011 - 10:12 -  Key projects in 2010:  -

In 2010, customers and key accounts once again renewed their trust in Gauthey Automatismes to support them with their major projects in France and around the world.

Notable examples:

Environment:

-For a French steelworks, creation of the electrical, automation and IT control components for a strategic sheet metal cooling machine and industrial wastewater treatment. -In St Fons, creation of the electrical component for a wastewater treatment plant (population equivalent of one million). -For a drinking water treatment plant in Equatorial Guinea, production of power and control cabinets of approximately 30 m in length, as well as all control consoles.

Logistics:

-For the pharmaceutical industry and the lingerie textile industry, creation of the electrical, automation and IT control components of the order picking lines.

Pont of Crimée in Villette (Paris)

Waterways:

-Pont de Crimée in Paris: replacement of the electrical equipment and automated fixtures in partnership with heavy engineering expert CM Paimboeuf. Built in 1885, the bridge's sleek architecture and ingenious technological design are the pride of the La Villette Basin. The bridge required a general overhaul to improve safety for users and maintenance personnel. The operation also served as the ideal occasion to modernise the bridge's manoeuvring and control mechanisms.

Customs security:

Working in partnership with world recognised manufacturer Smiths Heimann, Gauthey Automatismes produced the electrical assemblies and automated units for two container scanners in the ports of Apapa and Ashaye in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city, as well as the renovation of five container scanners in five ports in Japan. Other mobile scanners were also produced in 2010.

Nuclear:

At the Valinox plant in Montbard, in partnership with reputed mechanical manufacturer Sarrazin Technologies, Gauthey Automatismes designed the automated component of a tube handling system for steam generators in nuclear power plants.

♦   31/10/2010 - 16:05 -  PORTRAIT OF THE MONTH : Gauthey Automatismes :  -

You could be mistaken for thinking you were inside a spaceship, with rays of white and red light beaming from the walls and ceiling, and a window opening onto a world map dotted with coloured markers showing the places where the Autun-based company has commissioned machinery or a production line. Only the display cabinet in the reception hall serves as a reminder of Gauthey Automatismes' past. The company was actually founded in 1957 by the grandfather of the current two directors.

In 1993, as the steel industry was beginning its downward slide, Gauthey Automatismes proved its mettle by carving a strong foothold in a diversified, yet limited number of markets in a bid to forge business expertise in each specific area. The company therefore built upon its core expertise and raised the value added bar on its services. The firm added to its longstanding expertise in programming with in-depth knowledge of industrial processes, thereby enabling it to understand and even second-guess customers' requirements in the following areas:

1- Customs security: creation of an X-ray based non-destructive inspection vehicle for Smiths.

2- Metal casting, glass kiln: design and production of finishing lines, stripping, automated casting (ladle, circular conveyor, press furnace feed, and so on).

3- Material transfer and handling: design and production of conveyor lines, transhipment systems and fully automated shops.

4- Water and air treatment: process management in pollution control plants and drinking water production facilities (storage, regulation, filtration, chemical treatment, chemical analytics and CCTV systems).

Gauthey Automatismes has managed to forge close ties with international manufacturers by delivering on-site support around the world. The company is organised to provide commissioning support and after-sales assistance.

Most of the 45 employees are divided between three technical departments:

• The engineering department, which oversees electrical engineering studies and the development of automation and computing software (20 people).

• A set of machinery assembly and wiring shops.

• Site teams for on-site assembly operations.

The points that all automated industrial processes have in common are as follows:

• Data are fetched from actuators and sensors, and routed to the main control station (supervisor).

• The supervisor issues instructions to the engines and actuators.

• The supervisor manages alarms and curves that can be used by production and which focus on the number of parts produced, the number of defects, energy use, cycle times, and so on.

When designing production machinery, the automated component needs to be factored in at the same time as the technical process. This requirement is so essential, that Gauthey Automatismes always brings a mechanical expert on board when presenting its solutions to industrial firms.

For example, Gauthey Automatismes and Sarrazin Technologies submitted a joint bid in response to the invitation to tender that Valinox had launched for an automated system for transferring tubes from the output of the rolling mill as part of the Narval project. Success was achieved by both members of the Burgundy Nuclear Centre: the machinery is currently being assembled and will soon be commissioned at the Montbard site.

♦   17/06/2008 - 14:53 -  Business development-Recruitment-Training-Investment-Certification  -

Visite
- As forecast, the first 6 months of 2008 lived up to expectations. With the large number of orders at the start of the year we predict an annual turnover at least equal to that of last year. Not forgetting that the turnover grew by about 30% in 2007! In these first 6 months, exports remained strong (Belgium, Brazil, Germany, India, Morocco, Russia, South Korea U.K. etc …), with also high sales at home, in France.

- The second half of the year looks encouraging with contracts in water purification, heavy engineering and X-ray equipment in Africa, for example. Therefore, 2008 should be a good year !

- We continue to recruit and GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES continues its policy of training young employees knowing that this is the only real way to ensure a highly skilled team, with long-term growth and the guarantee of maintaining our know-how.

- Corporate training is very much in the headlines with important programmes in various technical fields, management, social welfare, purchasing and, naturally, safety and quality control.

- GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES continues to invest across the board :
The Design office is equipped with the latest software for various forms of computation and network technology programming.
Our software engineers continue to improve supervisory developments with the latest software including Windev, WizCon and Citect, but also with Windev and Visual Basic.

- Certification: in March 2008, we were audited again by AFAQ after the statutory 3 year period. Our ISO 9001-Version 2000 was successfully renewed.

Le FUTUR au PRESENT (Tomorrow’s Technology Today) remains our motto And we do our uppermost to prove it every day!

♦   02/06/2008 - 10:21 -  The AEA visit (Autun Enterprises Association)  -

- On Friday 30th May 2008, we welcomed the AEA Club. About 30 local company managers plus members of local institutions accepted our invitation. A guided tour of the premises with commentary, followed by question time, enabled all visitors to fully familiarise themselves with the latest developments at GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES.

- The visit finished with much lively, open discussion and an enjoyable meal organised by the hosts.

- Yet another highly successful communication exercise, following the ministerial visit of Christine LAGARDE in February 2008.

♦   29/02/2008 - 10:00 -  Visit of the Minister  -

Visite
On February 1st 2008, a highly memorable event took place at GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES :

Christine LAGARDE, the French Minister for Economic Affairs, Finance and Employment visited our plant.

- Unbelievable ……… but true !

Christine LAGARDE, the Minister in charge of Economic Affairs, Finance and Employment, did us the honour of visiting our company.

- This was a truly memorable event. The management and all the employees were at hand to welcome the Minister who was accompanied by numerous personalities.

- This unique event took place thanks to the support of the local member of Parliament, Jean-Paul ANCIAUX and was aimed at promoting the s.m.e. of the region involved in worldwide exports.
Mme Lagarde
- Also, as part of her ministerial responsibility, Christine LAGARDE is in charge of customs & excise. Therefore, she was very interested to see that GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES, in a client - partnership with SMITHS HEIMANN, produces specific equipment destined for customs services across the globe.

- After visiting the the R & D unit and the workshops full of numerous on-going projects, the minister saw SMITH’S “flagship” technology – the “mobile HCV” which equips the French customs and is partially constructed at GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES.

- The visit continued with a plenary meeting of over 80 local company chairmen. Marc GAUTHEY, the chairman of GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES, opened the meeting with a presentation of the company before talking about several topics of current interest to the government, such as tax funding for R & D, overtime pay and also the reforms linked to company taxes in France.

Mr Gauthey
- In reply, Christine LAGARDE firstly congratulated GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES on the exceptional growth ( of over 30% in 2007 with 60% in exports ) and then answered Marc GAUTHEY’s questions and concerns, strongly encouraging all those local leaders present to implement the government measures in order to encourage growth and generally improve purchasing power for the workforce. If the hearty applause from all present was a measure of success, then her reassuring words were very much appreciated.

- During the ensuing cocktail the minister took the opportunity to talk face-to-face and more informally with those present about current issues.

- After the minister’s departure the general atmosphere remained lively and convivial with much sharing of ideas and open discussion,
Signature du Livre d'or de l'Entreprise and the evening drew to a close with only one real regret - that this exceptional moment was over !

- The day will certainly be unforgettable for all those present and particularly for all the team at GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES.

- So when is the next big event ?

♦   20/11/2007 - 11:00 -  And for 2008  -

- The first quarter of 2008 looks encouraging with several important orders, a large part of which are for export.

- We intend to intensify our efforts in all market sectors in order to successfully resist growing competition which is particularly severe in the international & the latest technology areas.

It is vital to be active on all fronts if we don't want to be overtaken by low cost / developing countries whose economies are rapidly climbing the learning curve.

Also the strength of the Euro compared to the dollar makes competition in exports particularly difficult.

The objectives are perfectly clear: We need constant improvement & ever decreasing costs!

- Certainly, easier said than done... however, GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES has little choice and the company has always been successful in adapting to market trends!

Once again, we are ready to accept this challenge!

♦   10/11/2007 - 08:00 -  2007 is a special year !  -

- It is now certain... 2007 is a special year!

- The turnover has increased by at least 30% with a large part in export.

- Naturally, this is largely due to the dynamism of our clients & partners, but also to our relentless efforts over the last few years. These efforts have been in all areas with particular emphasis on training and R & D in new technology.

- Our client portfolio has significantly developed over the last couple of years, and this is certainly not only by chance!

- Important contracts are in progress for Russia, in Europe, in Asia and naturally in France.

- All this is to a large degree thanks to: an excellent team spirit, maximum individual input and overall high performance levels.

♦   05/11/2007 - 08:00 -  Delivery of the 100th mobile HCV vehicle  -

100eme HCV-M- The 100th mobile HCV vehicle was delivered in November 2007 to SMITHS Detection, the world leader in this type of X ray scanning system.

- This successful collaboration with GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES is based on long-standing mutual confidence.

- The HCV M (Heimann Cargo Vision Mobile) is a vehicle equipped with an x ray scanning system for checking lorries & containers. It can be fully operational at different check-points within 30 minutes.

-The check is carried out using the haulage company documents as the benchmark.

- The system is able to check all the contents as well as visualising false bottoms or partitions.

- The system is able to operate through steel with a thickness of up to 350 mm. The checks are aimed at detecting smuggled and counterfeit goods (alcohol, cigarettes, drugs and illegal merchandise, like arms and explosives etc).

- The main end-users are the Customs, the Police, port and airport authorities.

- These end-users are worldwide (Europe, USA, S.America, Africa, Middle East, Asia, Russia, New Zealand ) and naturally in France.

- GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES looks after certain specific parts for its client « SMITHS Detection » e.g. all studies and automation / supervision software, the control cabinets, all the electrical cabling, as well as all tests and equipment start ups and, sometimes, on-site maintenance.

♦   20/08/2007 - 10:53 -  Our « new look »…  -

Hall

-  We have heavily invested in 2006 & 2007 because we feel strongly that good working conditions are vital.

- Especially those areas for receiving & welcoming our clients and visitors. As well as pleasant surroundings its important to give a quick overview of the company, its origins, growth and "know-how".

- For this reason we have completely re-vamped our reception area.

- In addition to a comprehensive display of the range of material & equipment used in our field, a large LCD screen shows images of the company, our success stories and our beautiful region. This is an excellent showroom for the company and the GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES team.

♦   20/03/2007 - 11:02 -  GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES involvement in the local community  -

GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES plays an important role in the local community with a policy focused on certain activities. For example, we help local sports clubs where acheivement and team spirit are so important for the young. We also help organisations involved in humanitarian work and international aid. Naturally, we are not able to help all local clubs & associations, but, we are fully committed to the local community and proud to be active in supporting all those volunteers who help the less fortunate.

The profile of this week’s company

GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES in Autun

A know-how, well-known both in France and internationally

The man in question is remarkably straightforward, always friendly and jovial. Nevertheless, Marc Gauthey is at the head of a company with an excellent local, regional, national and even international reputation.
Gauthey Automatismes is a spin-off of Gauthey plc, set up in 1957 by Marc Gauthey’s father . Initially the company specialised in electrical engineering working particularly for the railways, mining & public works. In 1992, Gauthey plc split into two separate companies, Gauthey Automatismes & Gauthey Electricité, with Marc Gauthey becoming CEO of Gauthey Automatismes and at the same time focussing the business on the development of the latest technology, particularly automatic controls and industrial electricity.
At that time, automatic controls were still very new, however over the years they has become much more complex. Nevertheless, Marc Gauthey and the forty or so employees have always managed to keep abreast of developments.
This flexibility is a driving force in Gauthey Automatismes. The slogan, « tomorrow, today » is sufficient proof. At 57, Marc Gauthey, continues to push back the frontiers, in a field that he describes as « a high risk profession with very specific client requirements , where one should never lose sight of the need to keep ahead of the competition » quotes this dynamic leader
« Being aware of tomorrow’s market needs », remains for Marc Gauthey, the key driving force
With this in mind this CEO has invested in a specific « know-how », that the company « sells », bringing together a highly qualified team of engineers, technicians, site managers, job-lot managers, assemblers & cable layers …
From the design phase to the final turn-key operation including site management, testing, start-up, operator training and maintenance, the team looks after all aspects.

The skills of Gauthey Automatismes are varied & numerous : process control, power electronics, numerical control, I.T. and industrial electricity, supervision, management of industrial processes, are some examples of the « know-how » of this company with a turnover in 2005 of 6.4 m € .
The list of industrial sectors in which Gauthey Automatismes is involved is highly impressive : on site business includes, production lines, logistic platform design such as for « Siemens Dematic » water supply and water purification plants, for such towns as Givors, Thônes and Autun in France and most recently in Beirut in Lebanon. The company’s “know-how” is present in the automobile industry particularly with « equipment suppliers », in customs & excise for the aeronautic and airport sectors with « Smiths’ truck and container X ray inspection system ».
When speaking about the clients, Marc Gauthey prefers the term «business partner », clearly indicating the longstanding confidence and loyalty to the brand ( often for more than 15 years ). France, China, Mexico, Japan, India, Southern Korea, Algeria, Israël, U.S.A., Thailand. It’s a long list with clients spread around the globe.
To maintain their leadership and at the same time development new techniques, Gauthey Automatismes is launching a series of specific services including « Technical assistance » with « Hotline assistance », « Distance management » and even « Crisis management ».
Finally, their training programme. Every two or three years the company invests heavily in high quality training for the employees. Last year’s budget came to around 180,000 €. This certainly helps, in part, to explain the dynamic approach of this local company based at « les Chaumottes » in Autun. However, it is unfortunate that here, as elsewhere in this sector of activity, women are a rare breed, inspite of the numerous opportunities available .

For several years now GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES has become a key partner of manufacturers and no longer a simple sub-contractor-.

« As a result, we look for common solutions aiming to reduce cost and increase reliability » explains Marc GAUTHEY, Managing director of GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES.

GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES goes even further in client collaboration , offering specific contracts such as outsourcing and tele-assistance

A highly promising future

In the last 50 years GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES has exported its know-how to over 20 countries. The GAUTHEY brand can be found in Europe, Africa, America and Asia mainly through close links with international groups.

With a team of 40 skilled people, including 20 engineers and technicians GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES has endless potential with its well developed means and a very pleasant work environment.

A clear measure of success is the regular increase of annual turnover, in the order of 15%.

To consolidate this growth, GAUTHEY AUTOMATISMES invests regularly both in personnel training and in the day-to-day work tools.

Marc GAUTHEY tells us « It’s vital to never stop innovating and to offer turn-key solutions adapted to the specific needs of each client ».

With this in mind, the growth of industrial I.T. services is a priority, since this is a logical development from process controls.
